Resources for Georgetown Community Members Traveling or Studying in Countries Where the US State Department Has Urged Departure

  • On March 2, 2026, the U.S. Department of State urged Americans to depart Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
    • On March 4, the U.S. Department of State opened a crisis intake form for American citizens in the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Israel. To receive departure assistance information from the Department of State about available aviation and ground transportation options, please fill out this form.
  • Additionally, the U.S. Department of State issued a travel alert for Americans worldwide — and especially in the Middle East — to exercise caution and to follow the guidance in the latest security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
  • The operating status of Georgetown University in Qatar is being regularly evaluated.
    • Georgetown is working with International SOS (ISOS), a longtime partner, to support voluntary departures of Georgetown students, faculty and staff from the impacted nations listed above.
    • GU-Q is supporting students in Doha, and Georgetown’s Office of International Safety and Security (OISS) is in constant communication with students in the region.
  • OISS has reached out to all registered Georgetown travelers and are working to support their needs.
  • Students traveling in the MENA region should contact internationalsafety@georgetown.edu if they need travel assistance and as they make their way to their final destination.
  • Parents who need assistance reaching their students should contact Georgetown’s Dean of Students at dosstudentaffairs@georgetown.edu
  • As a reminder, all Georgetown students, faculty, and staff are required to register their university-related international travel with ISOS MyTrips prior to departure.
  • We advise all members of the Georgetown University community who are traveling to take the following steps:
    • Make sure your travel is registered in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
    • Follow local directives and U.S. Embassy guidance.
    • Consult with International SOS for security guidance.
    • Avoid protests and demonstrations.
    • Maintain heightened situational awareness and stay alert, especially in locations frequented by tourists.
    • Ensure a reliable way to communicate (e.g., local SIM card, mobile phone with roaming enabled and an international plan).
    • Maintain regular contact with their GU sponsoring unit (for university-related travel).
    • Maintain regular contact with airlines.
    • Engage Georgetown Travel Services for assistance with flights and accommodations.
    • TimelyCare provides 24/7 access to virtual care, self-care and well-being tools. Students who are outside of the U.S. have access to TalkNow and the self-care components of TimelyCare (e.g., Journeys, Peer Community).
